About
Explore
At Nature Connections, we use nature itself as a playground and a teacher.
Building confidence: Each step over a log or climb up a hill helps children trust their bodies and celebrate small victories.
Strengthening motor skills: Uneven ground, rocks, and tree roots naturally challenge balance, coordination, and core strength in ways a clinic can’t replicate.
- Fueling excitement for outdoor play: Nature-based sessions remind children how fun and rewarding it can be to spend time outside.
Activities are thoughtfully adapted to each child’s age, interests, and abilities, ensuring that every participant—from cautious toddlers to energetic tweens—feels included and capable.
Create
We love turning sticks, stones, leaves, and various natural treasures into art and other projects. Working with these materials invites children to slow down, notice textures and patterns and use their imaginations in new ways.
When kids gather pinecones for a sculpture or weave flowers into a crown, they’re not just making something beautiful, they’re strengthening fine-motor skills, problem-solving and planning. Natural materials are wonderfully open-ended: a branch can become a magic wand, a balance beam, or the frame for a miniature shelter.
Connect
Spending time with animals nurtures both body and heart. At Nature Connections, we weave safe, supervised animal interactions into therapy sessions to support growth on many levels.
Physical benefits: Caring for animals—whether it’s brushing a goat, scattering chicken feed, or filling water dishes—encourages balance, coordination, and strength.
Cognitive benefits: Animal interactions naturally foster development of executive functioning skills such as impulse control and force modulation, sustained attention, task sequencing, cognitive flexibility and working memory.
Social–emotional benefits: Animals provide unconditional presence. Children often feel calmer and more open when a furry or feathered friend is nearby. Feeding or grooming fosters empathy, patience, and responsibility, while the quiet companionship of an animal can reduce anxiety and boost confidence in social situations.
Every interaction is guided by a licensed occupational therapist to ensure safety and comfort for both children and animals. Whether a child is giggling at a curious chicken or resting a hand on a gentle goat, these moments of connection create lasting memories—and lasting growth.
Regulate
Nature is full of sights, sounds, textures, and smells that provide rich opportunities for children to explore and self-regulate. At Nature Connections, we use outdoor experiences to help kids manage sensory input in a safe, structured, and playful way.
Climbing trees, walking on uneven trails, or feeling the texture of leaves and soil engages the vestibular, proprioceptive, and tactile systems, helping children tune into their bodies and emotions. Gentle exposure to natural sounds and sights—like rustling leaves or flowing water—can calm the nervous system, while active exploration helps release excess energy.
Each nature-based activity is designed to meet a child’s individual sensory needs, helping them develop focus, emotional regulation, and confidence—skills that extend beyond the outdoors into everyday life.
